Welcome to Washington Elementary School!

 After weeks of practicing the Washington 5th grade band students performed their Christmas Concert. The 5th graders started the concert out in ‘surround sound’ standing in the isles playing Jolly Old St. Nick from memory.  Half way through the concert they showed a music video that the students created with the help of the Elizabeth Gamache, who recorded and edited the video.  The concert was a success and Mrs. Hagan was extremely proud of her students.

Lunch time at Washington Elementary School in Canon City keeps head custodian John Butts busy.  When he retreats down the hall to the storage closet that serves as his small office, the mood changes a bit.  Filled with bright Pez dispensers, the office looks more like a candy shop then a custodian closet.

His Pez collection started 13 years ago. John was given his first dispenser from the custodian that he replaced. Today he has over 1,000 Pez dispensers of all shapes and sizes. John says he had no clue when he started the collection how many characters existed. "I always think I'm getting close to having them all" he says, "but then over the holiday season they come out with other ones."

As the new ones come out, he adds to his office display. "I have to explain to them, well it's not a candy store. It's my office" he explains, " It just what I collect. If you come by when I'm here you can have the Pez candy."

While his office may be stuffed top the brim with Pez dispensers, there is still one that he is looking for. He adds, "I always thought it would be cool to have a Pez dispenser the size of a mailbox." As the search for the mailbox size Pez dispenser continues, John continues to share his collection with anyone who will stop by.

Students Particpate In Annual "Bear Fun Run

 

The Fun Run was hosted by our awesome P.T.O.  Many parents and volunteers showed up to help with the water station, name tags and various other tasks.  The students displayed their school spirit even in the cold misty weather!  They ran their little legs to exhaustion and raised over $7000!!  The proceeds will be used for various PTO sponsored events such as field trips, curriculum and technology support, CSAP celebrations, the Santa Shoppe, and special projects for the buildings and grounds.  Our hats off to students, parents, volunteers, and fund donors.  We could not be successful without you!

At the end of the 08-09 School year, Washington received funding from Mrs. Stott- our Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, Student Dignitaries, Holcim, Washington PTO and our Sunflower ABC money to purchase a lab of NEO 2s. These “laptops” will be used in the classrooms for writing, AR, Math Facts in a Flash, a response system to use as an entire class and for Accelerated Math. 
 ..
We were lucky enough to get funding for a second lab of 30 recently. We have a lab of 30 in the primary end that students will be able to use and a lab of 30 in the intermediate end.

First and second grade students are learning to use the NEO 2s during technology. It is fun to hear them say how “cool” they are and how fun it is. It is very motivating for students to also get their rough draft writing done so that they can use the NEO 2s to create a final copy that they print directly from the NEO or download to a computer to change the font, size and color and add graphics.

We are so excited to have these to help us utilize our 21st Century Skills.
